Book of Zechariah - Chapter 5 - Verse 9

5:9
Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Zechariah, the prophet describes a vision he had where he saw two women with wings like those of a stork emerging. These women were carrying an ephah, a unit of measurement used in ancient times for grain or other commodities, between the earth and the heavens. The imagery of the women with wings symbolizes the supernatural or divine nature of the vision and the ephah represents the importance of measuring or weighing one's actions. The wind in their wings suggests a sense of motion or change, perhaps indicating a shift in circumstances or the coming of a significant event. Overall, this verse conveys a message of divine intervention or judgment and serves as a reminder to stay vigilant and mindful of one's deeds.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from the Book of Zechariah is that it is a vision that the prophet sees, representing the purification and removal of sin from the land. The lifting up of the ephah by the two women with wings like those of a stork can be seen as a symbolic act of carrying away the sins of the people, much like the scapegoat ritual in the Old Testament. The wind in their wings could signify the divine power and guidance at work in this act of purification. Some scholars also suggest that the two women may represent the two kingdoms of Israel and Judah, working together to remove sin and restore righteousness in the land. Through careful word studies, the imagery in this verse can be further unpacked to reveal deeper theological meanings and insights into God's plan for His people.
