Book of Zechariah - Chapter 2 - Verse 2

2:2
Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Zechariah, the prophet describes a vision where he sees a man with a measuring line in his hand. When Zechariah asks the man where he is going, the man responds that he is going to measure Jerusalem to determine its exact dimensions. This act of measuring Jerusalem signifies a restoration of order and boundaries to the city that had been devastated and demolished. By measuring the city, the man is symbolically establishing the boundaries and limits of God's protection over Jerusalem. The verse conveys the message that God is actively involved in the restoration and protection of His chosen city, ensuring that it is preserved and blessed according to His divine plan. This vision serves as a reminder to the people of Jerusalem that God's presence and protection are with them, even in times of destruction and chaos.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of the verse describes it as a symbolic representation of God's divine plan for Jerusalem. The act of measuring can be seen as a metaphor for assessment and evaluation, indicating God's intention to examine and assess the spiritual condition of the city. This act of measurement can represent God's desire for order, precision, and completeness in His plan for Jerusalem. The idea of measuring Jerusalem may also signify God's promise to protect and care for His people, ensuring that they are within the boundaries of His divine will. Additionally, the verse may allude to the restoration and redemption of Jerusalem, as the act of measuring can be interpreted as a prelude to rebuilding and renewal. Through this measurement, God is depicted as a loving and faithful God who is intimately involved in the lives of His people, ensuring that they are guided and protected in accordance with His eternal plan.
