Book of Zechariah - Chapter 13 - Verse 5

13:5
But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth.

Meaning

The verse "But he shall say, I am no prophet, I am an husbandman; for man taught me to keep cattle from my youth." can be interpreted as a humble acknowledgment of one's background and profession. In this verse, the speaker is distinguishing themselves from being a prophet and instead identifies as a husbandman, which refers to a farmer or someone who works the land. By stating that they were taught to keep cattle from a young age, the speaker is highlighting their expertise in agricultural practices rather than in prophetic or spiritual matters. This verse showcases the importance of recognizing one's own skills and experiences, even if they may not align with traditional expectations or roles. It serves as a reminder that each individual has unique talents and knowledge to contribute to society, regardless of societal norms or labels.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the speaker declares that he is not a prophet, but rather a husbandman who has been taught how to care for cattle since his youth. This statement highlights the humility and simplicity of the speaker, emphasizing that he is not a learned or authoritative figure like a prophet, but rather a humble worker who has learned his craft through practical experience. By identifying himself as a husbandman, the speaker suggests that his knowledge and expertise come from the hands-on, practical instruction he has received throughout his life. This interpretation can serve as a reminder that wisdom and insight can come from various sources, not just from those who hold official titles or positions of authority. The theological implications of this verse point to the value of humility, hard work, and lifelong learning, as well as the idea that valuable knowledge can be gained through hands-on experience and practical instruction.
