Book of Revelation - Chapter 13 - Verse 2

13:2
And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

Meaning

In this verse from the Book of Revelation, the author describes a vision of a powerful and fearsome beast that combines characteristics of different animals. The beast is said to resemble a leopard, with feet like those of a bear and a mouth like a lion. These animalistic features symbolize the beast's strength, swiftness, and ferocity. The mention of the dragon giving the beast its power, seat, and authority signifies the supernatural and evil nature of the beast. Throughout the Bible, the dragon is often associated with Satan or the forces of evil, indicating that the beast is a manifestation of these dark forces. The description of the beast in this verse serves as a warning about the rise of powerful and destructive entities that can cause chaos and turmoil in the world.

Theological Overview

One common interpretation of the beast described in this verse from the book of Revelation is that it represents a powerful and intimidating force that emerges in the end times. The imagery of the leopard, bear, and lion may symbolize the combination of different characteristics and qualities from previous empires or rulers mentioned in the Bible. For example, the leopard could symbolize swiftness and aggression, the bear strength and brutality, and the lion ferocity and dominance. The fact that the dragon gives the beast its power and authority further emphasizes its evil nature and satanic influence. This passage is often interpreted as a warning of the rise of a tyrannical and oppressive force that will deceive many and lead them away from God. It serves as a reminder for believers to stay vigilant and faithful in the face of such challenges.
