11:5
And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Revelation describes a powerful and symbolic image of divine protection and justice. The imagery of fire proceeding out of the mouths of the protected individuals signifies the power of their words to destroy their enemies. In biblical symbolism, fire often represents purification and divine judgment. Therefore, this verse can be interpreted as a declaration of the ultimate protection granted to those who serve God faithfully. The idea that their enemies will be devoured by fire emphasizes the swift and decisive punishment that will befall anyone who tries to harm the chosen ones. This verse serves as a reminder of God's ultimate authority and power to protect his followers and hold wrongdoers accountable for their actions. It conveys a message of both protection for the faithful and warning for those who seek to do harm.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the imagery of fire proceeding out of the mouths of the two witnesses is symbolic and carries theological significance. Some scholars interpret this as a representation of the power of God's word, which is often described in the Bible as a double-edged sword that can bring judgment upon the enemies of God. The idea of fire coming out of their mouths could also allude to their preaching, which is fervent and convicting, bringing destruction to those who oppose them. By understanding this metaphorical language, we can see that the witnesses are protected by divine power and authority, and any attempt to harm them will result in dire consequences. This verse emphasizes the importance of heeding the message of God's chosen messengers and warns against opposing the will of God.
