Book of Psalms - Chapter 95 - Verse 11

95:11
Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

Meaning

When God declares in the verse "Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest," he is referencing a solemn oath made in anger towards the Israelites. This statement is found in the Book of Hebrews, where the author reflects on the Israelites' disobedience and lack of faith during their time in the wilderness. According to the context, God had promised the Israelites a land of rest, flowing with milk and honey, but due to their rebellion and unbelief, they were not allowed to enter. The phrase "enter into my rest" symbolizes the ultimate place of peace, comfort, and blessing that God had prepared for his people. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobeying God and the importance of having faith in His promises. It is a warning to all believers to remain faithful and obedient in order to receive the blessings and rest that God offers.

Theological Overview

The verse 'Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.' carries a strong theological interpretation that stems from the context of the passage in which it appears. In this verse, God expresses his dissatisfaction with the disobedient Israelites, who continually rebelled against Him despite witnessing His miracles and experiencing His provisions. The phrase 'my wrath' suggests God's righteous anger towards the people who failed to trust and obey Him. The concept of 'rest' in this context refers to the promised land of Canaan, which symbolizes the ultimate peace and fulfillment that God provides to those who remain faithful to Him. Through a word study, we can see that 'rest' also conveys the idea of ceasing from labor and finding tranquility in God's presence. This verse serves as a warning to believers to heed God's commands and remain steadfast in their faith to enter into His rest and enjoy His blessings.
