Book of Psalms - Chapter 55 - Verse 19

55:19
God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abideth of old. Selah. Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.

Meaning

Psalm 55:19 speaks of God hearing and afflicting those who have not changed and do not fear Him. The concept of God afflicting the wicked is a common theme throughout the Bible. In this verse, the phrase "even he that abideth of old" refers to God as the eternal and unchanging being who has always existed. The mention of "Selah" at the end of the verse signifies a pause for reflection on the gravity of the words that were just spoken. The reason why God afflicts those who do not fear Him is because they have become complacent in their ways and have refused to change. Their lack of fear of God stems from their refusal to acknowledge His power and authority over their lives. By not fearing God, they have essentially rejected the very source of their salvation and deliverance. Consequently, they face the consequences of their actions as God enacts justice upon them for their unrepentant hearts.

Theological Overview

When considering the theological interpretation of this verse, it is important to focus on the concept of God's eternal nature and His response to those who do not fear Him. The phrase "he that abideth of old" emphasizes God's everlasting existence, highlighting His eternal nature as the Almighty who has always been and always will be. In this context, the verse suggests that God will hear the prayers of His people and respond by afflicting those who do not fear Him. The word "afflict" implies a form of punishment or distress that God may bring upon those who fail to acknowledge His sovereignty.

Additionally, the verse brings to light the idea that the lack of change in one's life can lead to a lack of fear for God. The phrase "Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God" indicates that those who remain stagnant in their ways, refusing to grow spiritually or change their behavior, may become complacent in their faith. This lack of fear or reverence for God can result in divine intervention to bring about a change or correction in their lives.

Overall, this verse emphasizes the importance of acknowledging God's eternal nature, fearing Him, and being open to personal growth and transformation in order to avoid His corrective actions. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of spiritual stagnation and the need for continuous reverence and obedience towards the Almighty.
