Book of Psalms - Chapter 37 - Verse 7

37:7
Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

Meaning

This verse from the book of Psalms reminds us to trust in the Lord and have patience in waiting for His timing. It cautions us not to be envious of those who may seem to be prospering in their wicked ways, as their success is only temporary. The verse encourages us to focus on our relationship with God and to seek His guidance in all things. By resting in the Lord and trusting in His plan, we can find peace and contentment, knowing that He is in control. It serves as a reminder that God sees the bigger picture and that His ways are higher than our ways. So, instead of worrying about the success of others, we should trust in God's timing and have faith that He will bring justice and righteousness to pass in His perfect timing.

Theological Overview

Many theologians interpret the instruction to "Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him" as a call to trust in God's timing and not to be anxious or disturbed by the success of those who are wicked. This verse teaches believers to have confidence that God will ultimately bring justice and righteousness to pass. The word "fret" in this context can be understood as a warning against becoming envious or resentful of those who are prospering through deceit or wickedness. By focusing on trusting in the Lord and waiting patiently for His guidance and justice, believers can find peace and avoid being consumed by jealousy or anger towards others. This verse underscores the importance of having faith in God's plan and not allowing the actions of evildoers to shake that faith.
