Book of Psalms - Chapter 137 - Verse 7

137:7
Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof.

Meaning

When the children of Edom are mentioned in this verse, it is referring to the descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob in the Bible. The Edomites were historical enemies of the Israelites and were known for their hostility towards them. The phrase "raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof" reflects the intense desire of the Edomites to see Jerusalem destroyed completely. The Edomites took pleasure in the destruction of Jerusalem, even going as far as encouraging it to be razed to its very foundation. This verse serves as a reminder to God to hold the Edomites accountable for their actions and to remember the harm they wished to bring upon Jerusalem. It highlights the importance of seeking justice and righteousness in the face of those who seek to destroy and harm others. Ultimately, this verse reminds us of the consequences of harboring hatred and animosity towards others, as well as the need for forgiveness and reconciliation.

Theological Overview

When looking at the theological interpretation of the verse, "Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof," one can see a plea for God to remember the actions of the Edomites against Jerusalem. The Edomites were descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob, and often represented Israel's enemies in the Old Testament. Their call for the destruction of Jerusalem to its very foundation indicates a deep level of hatred and opposition towards God's chosen people. This verse highlights the importance of remembering the injustices committed against the people of God and asking for divine intervention. It also serves as a reminder of the consequences of standing against God's chosen people and the city of Jerusalem, which holds a significant spiritual and historical importance in the Bible.
