Book of Psalms - Chapter 11 - Verse 1

11:1
To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. In the LORD put I my trust: how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?

Meaning

Psalm 11 is attributed to King David and is a plea for trust and faith in the Lord amidst adversity. In this verse, David is expressing his complete reliance on God as his protector and refuge. He questions those who suggest he should flee like a bird to the mountains for safety, implying that his trust in God is strong enough to withstand any threat. By acknowledging his trust in the Lord, David is affirming his faith and confidence in God's ability to deliver him from any danger or trouble. This verse serves as a reminder to believers to place their trust in God rather than relying on their own strength or the advice of others. It encourages us to turn to God in times of uncertainty and difficulty, knowing that He is our ultimate source of protection and security.

Theological Overview

Psalm 11, written by David, reflects the author's complete trust in the Lord despite facing challenging circumstances. The phrase "In the LORD put I my trust" emphasizes David's unwavering faith in God's protection and guidance. The subsequent question, "how say ye to my soul, Flee as a bird to your mountain?" conveys a sense of disbelief towards those who may be advising David to run away and seek refuge elsewhere. The comparison to a bird fleeing to a mountain suggests a temporary escape or finding safety in a physical location, but David rejects this advice in favor of trusting in the Lord. This verse highlights the conflict between worldly wisdom and spiritual faith, as David chooses to remain steadfast in his confidence in God's providence.
