Book of Proverbs - Chapter 2 - Verse 19

2:19
None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

Meaning

This verse from the Book of Proverbs is a warning against the dangers of temptation and sin. The imagery used in this verse suggests that once someone falls into the temptation of sin, it is very difficult for them to turn back and find the right path again. The phrase "None that go unto her return again" implies that those who succumb to temptation may find it nearly impossible to escape its grasp and return to a life of righteousness. The idea that those who give in to temptation do not "take hold of the paths of life" suggests that they will not be able to find the true path to spiritual fulfillment and eternal salvation. This verse serves as a reminder to always be vigilant against temptation and to strive to live a life of virtue and righteousness in order to stay on the path of life that leads to eternal blessings.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse can be seen in the context of the consequences of giving in to temptation and straying from the path of righteousness. The phrase "None that go unto her return again" may refer to the allure of sinful behavior, suggesting that once someone gives in to temptation, it can be difficult to recover and return to the ways of righteousness. The following statement "neither take they hold of the paths of life" underscores the idea that by succumbing to temptation, individuals are led away from the path of righteousness and away from the abundant life that God intends for them. This verse serves as a warning against the seductive nature of sin and encourages believers to stay firm in their faith and commitment to following God's path. Through theological reflection and word studies, we can gain a deeper understanding of the importance of staying true to our faith and resisting temptation in order to experience the fullness of life that God offers.
