Book of Obadiah - Chapter 1 - Verse 4

1:4
Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

Meaning

The verse "Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD" serves as a warning and reminder of the consequences of pride and arrogance. In this verse, the eagle symbolizes strength, power, and exaltation, as the eagle is known for soaring high in the sky and building its nest in secure places. However, despite one's attempts to elevate themselves to great heights, the verse emphasizes that God will bring them down if they become too prideful and neglect their dependence on Him.

By using the imagery of the eagle setting its nest among the stars, the verse highlights the audacity and arrogance of those who exalt themselves above others, thinking they are untouchable and beyond reach. The message is clear that no matter how high one may ascend in their own eyes, they are ultimately subject to the authority and will of the Lord. The verse conveys the importance of humility and the consequences of pride, serving as a cautionary tale for all who seek to elevate themselves above others instead of staying grounded in faith and humility.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Obadiah, the imagery of the eagle is used to convey the idea of arrogance and pride. The eagle is known for its lofty flight and majestic appearance, symbolizing power and superiority. By exalting oneself "as the eagle" and setting one's nest "among the stars," one is portraying themselves as being above others and untouchable in their position. However, the Lord declares that even those who exalt themselves in such a way will be brought down. This serves as a reminder that pride and arrogance are not pleasing to God, and that He is the ultimate authority who humbles the proud. This verse can be seen as a warning against the dangers of pride and a call to humility before the Lord.

American Standard Version
