Book of Numbers - Chapter 35 - Verse 8

35:8
And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.

Meaning

This verse from the Book of Numbers outlines the allocation of cities to the Levites, a tribe of Israel set apart for religious duties. The cities given to the Levites were not inherited by individual tribes, but rather divided based on the size of each tribe's land. Larger tribes were expected to give more cities, while smaller tribes were to give fewer. This distribution ensured that every tribe had an equal opportunity to provide for the Levites. The Levites were supported by tithes and offerings from the other tribes, as they were not given a portion of land like the other tribes. By giving cities to the Levites, the children of Israel were fulfilling their obligation to provide for those dedicated to the service of God. This verse emphasizes the importance of sharing resources and supporting those who are devoted to spiritual matters.

Theological Overview

Within this verse from the book of Numbers, a theological interpretation highlights the idea of fairness and just distribution among the tribes of Israel. The concept of equality is emphasized as the allocation of cities is based on the size of the tribe's possession. This indicates a sense of order and balance within the community, ensuring that each tribe is given a portion that is proportionate to their inheritance. The mention of the Levites receiving cities according to their inheritance reflects the importance of honoring and providing for those dedicated to serving in religious roles. The word study of 'possession' can also shed light on the significance of land ownership and stewardship in ancient Israelite society, demonstrating the value placed on the land as a source of sustenance and identity for the tribes. Overall, this verse serves as a reminder of the principles of justice, equality, and community responsibility that underlie the distribution of resources among the children of Israel.
