Book of Numbers - Chapter 33 - Verse 55

33:55
But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Numbers in the Bible, the Israelites are being warned about the consequences of failing to fully obey God's command to drive out the inhabitants of the land they were promised. The metaphorical language used in the verse paints a vivid picture of what will happen if the Israelites allow the people of the land to remain among them. The phrase "pricks in your eyes" suggests that these inhabitants will be a constant source of irritation and discomfort, much like a thorn in one's side. They will not only be a nuisance but will also cause trouble and distress for the Israelites, making their lives difficult and causing unrest in the land. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of following God's commands completely and the consequences of partial obedience.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of this verse involves the spiritual significance of driving out the inhabitants of the land. In the context of the Israelites entering the Promised Land, God commanded them to completely conquer and drive out the inhabitants. Failure to do so would result in consequences for the Israelites. The language used in this verse, such as "pricks in your eyes," "thorns in your sides," and "vex you," emphasizes the idea that allowing the remaining inhabitants to stay would lead to constant irritation and trouble for the Israelites in the land. This serves as a warning against compromise and disobedience to God's commands. The imagery of "pricks" and "thorns" suggests a painful and burdensome presence that would hinder the peace and prosperity of the Israelites. Therefore, the theological lesson from this verse highlights the importance of complete obedience and trust in following God's directives without compromise.

American Standard Version
