Book of Numbers - Chapter 31 - Verse 47

31:47
Even of the children of Israel's half, Moses took one portion of fifty, both of man and of beast, and gave them unto the Levites, which kept the charge of the tabernacle of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

Meaning

Within this verse, Moses is dividing the spoils of war between the children of Israel and the Levites, who were responsible for caring for the tabernacle of the Lord. The Levites were a tribe set apart for the service of the Lord, and their duties included maintaining the sacred tent where God's presence dwelled among the people. By giving a portion of the spoils to the Levites, Moses is following the command of the Lord to provide for those who serve in His sanctuary. This act reinforces the importance of supporting those who are dedicated to the worship and service of God. It also serves as a reminder to the children of Israel that they are called to honor and care for those who are set apart for sacred duties.

Theological Overview

Within this verse from the book of Numbers, there is a theological significance in the distribution of resources among the children of Israel. The allocation of one portion out of fifty both for the people and the animals signifies a form of offering or tithe that was to be given to the Levites, who were entrusted with the responsibility of caring for the tabernacle of the Lord. This act of giving was a demonstration of obedience to the commands of the Lord as communicated through Moses. The Levites, as the designated priests and keepers of the sacred space, were to be supported by the community in order to fulfill their duties in maintaining the tabernacle and facilitating worship. This practice highlights the importance of stewardship, generosity, and the shared responsibility within the community of faith. It also serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all members in contributing to the work of God and upholding the sanctity of the divine dwelling place.
