Book of Numbers - Chapter 30 - Verse 8

30:8
But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard it; then he shall make her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect: and the LORD shall forgive her.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Numbers, it is outlined that if a woman makes a vow to the LORD and her husband disallows it on the day he hears it, then her vow will be rendered void. The husband has the authority to cancel his wife's vow on the same day he learns of it. The woman will not be held accountable for breaking her vow, and the LORD will forgive her for any consequences of breaking it. This verse demonstrates the importance of the husband's role in the family and his ability to intervene in his wife's decision-making. It also highlights the LORD's mercy and forgiveness towards those who unintentionally make vows that they cannot keep. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the significance of communication and mutual respect in marriage, as well as the need for grace and forgiveness in the face of human fallibility.

Theological Overview

One significant theological interpretation of this verse is the importance of the husband's role in the marriage relationship. In ancient Israelite society, the husband had the authority to disallow or confirm his wife's vows. This verse illustrates the husband's power in the marriage covenant and the responsibility he had in overseeing his wife's actions. Additionally, this verse highlights the idea of accountability and forgiveness in relationships. By disallowing his wife's vow, the husband is releasing her from the commitment she made, and the Lord forgives her for any potential consequences of breaking that vow. This emphasizes the role of forgiveness and grace in marriage, where individuals can find relief from burdensome promises through the intervention and forgiveness of their partners and ultimately, from the Lord.

American Standard Version

But if her husband disallow her in the day that he heareth it, then he shall make void her vow which is upon her, and the rash utterance of her lips, wherewith she hath bound her soul: and Jehovah will forgive her.
