Book of Numbers - Chapter 22 - Verse 37

22:37
And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Numbers in the Bible, Balak, the king of Moab, is questioning Balaam, a prophet, about why he did not immediately heed his call. The context of this verse is that Balak wanted Balaam to curse the people of Israel, who were encroaching on his territory. Balak believed that by calling on Balaam, he could use his supernatural powers to bring harm to the Israelites. Balak's question to Balaam reflects his frustration and impatience with Balaam for not responding to his summons right away. Balak is essentially asking Balaam why he did not come to him immediately, as he believed he had the power and influence to promote Balaam to a position of honor. However, Balaam's delay in responding to Balak's call ultimately serves to demonstrate that Balaam was not easily swayed by promises of wealth or prestige, but rather acted according to his own moral compass and divine guidance.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the book of Numbers, we see Balak, the king of Moab, expressing his frustration to Balaam, the prophet he had summoned to curse the Israelites. Balak expected Balaam to come immediately upon being summoned, questioning why Balaam had not responded promptly to his call. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the themes of obedience and power dynamics. Balak's question to Balaam reflects his belief in his own authority and ability to elevate Balaam to honor. However, the underlying message here is that true honor comes from God, not from human promotion. This verse serves as a reminder that we must prioritize obedience to God over seeking recognition and honor from others, as true promotion comes from aligning our will with God's.
