And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

Meaning

After conquering the land of the Amorites, Israel took possession of all their cities and villages, including Heshbon. This verse highlights the fulfillment of God's promise to give the land to the Israelites as an inheritance. The Amorites were a powerful and wealthy people who inhabited this region, but through the strength and guidance of the Lord, the Israelites were able to defeat them and claim the land as their own. This event marked a significant milestone in Israel's journey to establish themselves as a nation in the Promised Land. It also serves as a reminder of God's faithfulness and provision to His people, as He leads them to victory and grants them the land He had promised to their ancestors. The settling of Israel in the cities of the Amorites symbolizes the establishment of their presence and authority in the land, as they continue to follow God's guidance and fulfill His plan for them.

Theological Overview

The verse describes the conquest of the Amorite cities by the Israelites, highlighting their victories in capturing these cities and settling in them. From a theological perspective, this event is an example of God fulfilling the promise He made to the Israelites to give them the land of Canaan (Deuteronomy 1:8). The Amorites were a Canaanite tribe known for their wickedness and idolatry, and their defeat by the Israelites serves as a display of God's judgment against sin and His faithfulness to His chosen people. The word 'dwelt' in the verse signifies not just a physical occupation of the cities, but also a spiritual significance of inhabiting the land that God had promised to Israel. It speaks to the idea of God establishing His people in the places He has appointed for them, symbolizing His provision, protection, and presence among them. In summary, this verse showcases the sovereignty of God in fulfilling His promises and establishing His people in the land He had prepared for them.
