Book of Numbers - Chapter 18 - Verse 21

18:21
And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Meaning

In this verse from the book of Numbers, it is stated that the children of Levi were given the tenth of everything in Israel as an inheritance for the service they provide in the tabernacle of the congregation. This tenth, known as the tithe, was a form of giving back to God a portion of what He had blessed the people with. The Levites were chosen by God to serve in the tabernacle and perform various duties such as guarding the sanctuary, assisting the priests with sacrifices, and leading the people in worship. In return for their dedicated service, they were allocated a portion of the offerings and sacrifices brought by the people. This arrangement allowed the Levites to focus on their sacred duties without having to worry about providing for themselves financially. By giving the children of Levi the tithe, God was ensuring that His chosen servants were cared for and could continue to fulfill their roles in the worship and service of the community.

Theological Overview

The verse from the book of Numbers is an important example of the theological interpretation of the tithe in the Old Testament. The tenth part of the people's produce was given to the Levites as an inheritance in exchange for their service in the tabernacle. This indicates the value placed on the work of the Levites in maintaining the worship and sacrifices of the community. The word 'inheritance' here suggests that this tithe was not just a payment for services rendered, but a recognition of the special role that the Levites played in the religious life of Israel. The theological significance of this arrangement highlights the idea of giving back to God a portion of what He has given to us, as a form of worship and gratitude. This verse provides insight into the Old Testament economy and the importance of supporting those who serve in the worship of God.
