Book of Numbers - Chapter 14 - Verse 3

14:3
And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?

Meaning

When the Israelites reached the land promised to them by the Lord, they became fearful of the unknown and questioned why God had brought them there. They doubted their ability to conquer the land and feared for the safety of their families. This moment of doubt and fear showcased the lack of faith and trust the Israelites had in the Lord's plan for them. By expressing a desire to return to Egypt, they were essentially wishing to go back to a life of bondage and oppression, forsaking the freedom and blessings that God had provided them with. This verse serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of doubt and the importance of having faith in God's promises, even in the face of uncertainty. It reminds us that when we allow fear to cloud our judgment, we may lose sight of the blessings and opportunities that God has in store for us.

The word "prey" in this context emphasizes the vulnerability of the Israelites and their fear of being overcome by enemy forces. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of faith and trust in God's guidance, even in the face of uncertainty and adversity.
