Book of Matthew - Chapter 7 - Verse 23

7:23
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Meaning

When Jesus says, "I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity," he is emphasizing the importance of having a personal relationship with him. In this verse, Jesus is addressing those who may have claimed to follow him and perform miracles in his name, but lacked a true connection with him. The term "know" in this context goes beyond mere intellectual awareness; it implies a deep and intimate relationship. Those who are separated from Jesus are described as "workers of iniquity," indicating a lifestyle characterized by sin and disobedience to God's commands. The message here is a solemn warning to not only profess faith in Jesus but to also live a life that reflects that faith through obedience and righteousness.

Theological Overview

Within the theological interpretation of the verse 'And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity,' scholars and theologians often focus on the concept of knowing in a biblical sense. In this context, the word "know" goes beyond mere knowledge and implies a deep personal relationship. The phrase "I never knew you" signifies a lack of intimate relationship with God despite outward expressions of religious piety. The emphasis here is on the quality of the relationship rather than just a surface-level acquaintance. Additionally, the mention of "ye that work iniquity" highlights the importance of righteous living in the Christian faith. This verse serves as a warning against hypocritical behavior and stresses the significance of authenticity in one's relationship with God. It reminds believers of the importance of genuine faith and obedience to God's teachings, rather than just performing religious acts for show. Overall, this verse prompts reflection on the nature of one's relationship with God and the importance of living a life that aligns with His will.
