Book of Matthew - Chapter 5 - Verse 28

5:28
But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is teaching on the seriousness of heart attitudes, specifically the sin of lust. He is emphasizing that the outward act of adultery is connected to the inner state of the heart. The act of looking at a woman with lustful thoughts is equated to committing adultery in one's heart. This means that even if a person does not physically engage in adultery, the intention and desire in their heart is still sinful in the eyes of God. Jesus is highlighting the importance of not only refraining from sinful actions, but also guarding one's heart and thoughts. This verse emphasizes the holistic nature of sin, where thoughts and intentions are just as important as actions. It serves as a reminder to believers to seek purity not only in outward behavior but also in the depths of their hearts.

Theological Overview

When analyzing the theological interpretation of the verse 'But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart', it is important to note that Jesus is not simply addressing the physical act of adultery, but also the intentions and desires of the heart. This verse emphasizes the importance of purity of heart and mind, not just outward actions. By lusting after a woman in one's heart, one is already committing adultery according to Jesus' standards. This verse highlights the importance of controlling one's thoughts and desires, as they can lead to sinful actions. It serves as a reminder that God looks at the heart and intentions of every individual, not just their outward behavior. Through this interpretation, we can understand the depth of Jesus' teachings on moral purity and the importance of guarding one's heart against sinful desires.
