Book of Matthew - Chapter 5 - Verse 17

5:17
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is addressing misconceptions about his purpose on earth. He wants to make it clear that he is not here to abolish the laws and teachings of the prophets that came before him, but rather to fulfill them. Jesus came to bring the true meaning and purpose of the law and prophets to fruition. He did not come to invalidate or nullify the teachings of the Old Testament, but to complete them and reveal their ultimate purpose. By living out these teachings in his own life and through his teachings, Jesus demonstrated how they were meant to be understood and applied. This verse highlights the continuity between the Old and New Testaments, emphasizing the importance of understanding the historical context and significance of both to fully grasp the message of salvation that Jesus brought to humanity.
