Book of Matthew - Chapter 27 - Verse 65

27:65
Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

Meaning

In this verse from the Gospel of Matthew, Pilate instructs the chief priests and Pharisees to take the necessary steps to secure Jesus' tomb. By saying "Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can," Pilate is giving them permission to set up a guard at the tomb to ensure that Jesus' body is not taken away as had been rumored. This directive reveals Pilate's awareness of the concerns surrounding Jesus' burial and his willingness to accommodate the religious authorities. Pilate's words also highlight the tension and political maneuverings surrounding Jesus' death, as the religious leaders seek to maintain control and authority over the situation. Additionally, Pilate's command sets the stage for the events that will unfold in the following verses, leading to the discovery of Jesus' resurrection.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Pilate's statement to the chief priests and Pharisees provides an interesting theological interpretation. The word "watch" in this context refers to a guard or group of soldiers who were meant to keep a watchful eye over a specific area. Pilate's instructions to the priests to make the watch "as sure as ye can" could be seen as a reflection of his skepticism towards the claims being made about Jesus. By asking them to secure the watch, Pilate may have been expressing doubt that anything truly extraordinary would happen, despite the priests' fears of Jesus' followers attempting to steal the body. This verse highlights the political and religious tensions of the time, as well as the power dynamics at play in Jesus' trial and crucifixion. It also emphasizes Pilate's role as a skeptical and somewhat reluctant participant in the events leading up to Jesus' death, adding depth to the narrative of Jesus' final hours.
