Book of Matthew - Chapter 27 - Verse 62

27:62
Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

Meaning

In this verse from the Gospel of Matthew, we see the account of the chief priests and Pharisees coming together to speak with Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea. The day being referred to is the day after the preparation, which is thought to be the day before the Sabbath when Jesus was crucified. This meeting of the religious leaders with Pilate is significant as it marks the beginning of the plot to secure the tomb of Jesus. The chief priests and Pharisees were fearful that Jesus' followers would steal his body and claim that he had risen from the dead, fulfilling his prophecy. Therefore, they asked Pilate to secure the tomb with guards and a seal to prevent any tampering. This verse sets the stage for the unfolding events surrounding Jesus' resurrection and the disbelief of the religious leaders despite the signs and prophecies being fulfilled.

Theological Overview

The theological interpretation of the verse "Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate," highlights the political and religious tensions surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus.
