Book of Matthew - Chapter 26 - Verse 45

26:45
Then cometh he to his disciples, and saith unto them, Sleep on now, and take your rest: behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.

Meaning

When Jesus uttered these words to his disciples, he was in the garden of Gethsemane, just before his arrest and crucifixion. The phrase "Sleep on now, and take your rest" can be seen as a compassionate recognition of the disciples' physical exhaustion. Jesus knew that they had been with him through trials and tribulations, and he understood their need for rest. However, the following statement, "behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners," reveals the gravity of the situation. Jesus was preparing his disciples for the imminent betrayal and suffering that he was about to face. This verse serves as a reminder of Jesus' unwavering commitment to fulfill his purpose, even in the face of betrayal and imminent death.

Theological Overview

Within this verse, there is a poignant moment where Jesus addresses his disciples as they are resting. The phrase "Sleep on now, and take your rest" can be seen as a reflection of the compassion of Jesus towards his tired followers. It shows his understanding of their physical needs and the human limitations they face. However, amidst this moment of rest, Jesus also warns them that "the hour is at hand, and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands of sinners." This warning serves as a reminder of the impending betrayal and crucifixion that Jesus is about to face. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the dual nature of Jesus as both a compassionate leader who cares for his followers and as the prophesied Messiah who must fulfill his destiny through sacrifice. This verse serves as a reminder for believers to find refuge in Jesus during times of rest, while also being aware of the greater spiritual battle at hand.
