Book of Matthew - Chapter 26 - Verse 12

26:12
For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial.

Meaning

When Mary poured expensive ointment on Jesus' body, she did so as a gesture of love and adoration towards him. However, Jesus also interpreted her actions as symbolic of his impending burial. By anointing him with the ointment, Mary unknowingly foreshadowed Jesus' death and burial, emphasizing the significance of his sacrifice and the fulfillment of his purpose on earth. This act of devotion not only demonstrated Mary's deep reverence for Jesus but also revealed her understanding of the gravity of the events that were about to unfold. In this verse, we see Mary's profound faith and her willingness to honor and prepare Jesus for the ultimate sacrifice he was about to make for humanity.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of the verse "For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial" comes from the symbolism of the act itself. The pouring of expensive ointment on Jesus' body by the woman is seen as an act of love and devotion towards him. It can be interpreted as a preparation for his burial, foreshadowing the sacrifice he would soon make for humanity. This act highlights the woman's deep understanding of Jesus' impending death and her desire to honor him in the best way she knows how. The ointment symbolizes her recognition of Jesus' significance and her willingness to give of her most valuable possession in service to him. Through her actions, she demonstrates faith, humility, and sacrificial love, setting an example for others to follow in their own relationships with Christ.
