Book of Matthew - Chapter 21 - Verse 33

21:33
Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:

Meaning

In this parable, Jesus uses the metaphor of a householder who plants a vineyard, hedges it, digs a winepress, builds a tower, and then entrusts it to vine-growers while he goes away. The householder represents God, the vineyard symbolizes Israel, and the vine-growers are the religious leaders of the time. God has given them everything they need to succeed and produce good fruit. The hedges around the vineyard represent protection and care, the winepress signifies the opportunity for productivity, and the tower stands for oversight and guidance. The householder leaving for a far country could symbolize God's patience with his people, giving them time to repent and change their ways. However, the religious leaders fail in their responsibilities and instead mistreat and even kill those sent by the householder to collect the fruits, representing the prophets throughout the Old Testament. This parable warns against rejecting God's messengers and the consequences of misusing the gifts and opportunities he provides. It serves as a reminder to all believers to use their gifts and resources wisely and to always be faithful in their stewardship.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from Matthew 21:33-36 is that it represents God entrusting His people with responsibilities to care for His creation and to bear fruit. The householder in the parable symbolizes God, who provides everything needed for His people to thrive and be productive. The vineyard represents the world and all that God has created, while the husbandmen are the individuals responsible for tending to and cultivating His creation. God, in His wisdom, has given us the tools and resources necessary for us to succeed in fulfilling our roles as stewards of His creation. The tower and the winepress signify God's provision of protection and abundance, ensuring that His people have everything they need to flourish. However, the parable also serves as a warning against neglecting our responsibilities and failing to bear fruit, as the consequences of such actions are dire. By reflecting on this parable, we are reminded of our duty to honor God through faithful stewardship and to seek His guidance in fulfilling the tasks He has entrusted to us.
