Book of Matthew - Chapter 21 - Verse 27

21:27
And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

Meaning

When Jesus asked the religious leaders by what authority he was performing miracles and teaching, they were unable to provide an answer. This response reflects their unwillingness to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah or to accept his teachings. In return, Jesus refused to indulge them by revealing the source of his authority. This exchange highlights the ongoing conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders of his time, who were often resistant to his message and sought to discredit him. By not disclosing the basis of his authority to those who were already skeptical and rejecting of him, Jesus emphasized the importance of genuine faith and open hearts in understanding his ministry. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of humility, discernment, and receptiveness to the teachings of Jesus, even when they challenge our preconceived notions or beliefs.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of this verse is that it highlights the importance of authority and obedience in the Christian faith. In this passage, Jesus questions the chief priests and elders about the authority behind His actions. Their response reveals a lack of understanding and submission to divine authority. By refusing to answer Jesus' question, they demonstrate their unwillingness to acknowledge His power and authority as the Son of God. This interaction serves as a reminder to believers of the need to recognize and submit to God's authority in their lives. Additionally, this verse may prompt individuals to reflect on their own responses to Jesus' authority and consider whether they are living in alignment with His will.
