19:8
He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

Meaning

In this passage from the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus is addressing the Pharisees who questioned him about divorce. He explains that Moses allowed divorce because of the hardness of people's hearts, but it was not God's original plan. Jesus is emphasizing the sanctity of marriage and the permanence of the marital bond as intended by God from the beginning of creation. By pointing to the original design of marriage in Genesis, Jesus is highlighting the importance of commitment, love, and faithfulness in a marriage relationship. This verse serves as a reminder that God's intention for marriage is for a husband and wife to be united as one for life, reflecting the unconditional love and faithfulness that God has for his people.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Jesus addresses the issue of divorce and cites Moses' allowance for it as a concession due to the hardness of the people's hearts. The theological interpretation of this verse underscores Jesus' emphasis on the sanctity of marriage as an institution established by God from the beginning of creation. By referencing "from the beginning," Jesus is pointing back to the original design of marriage as a lifelong union between a man and a woman. His words highlight the contrast between God's intention for marriage and the human tendency to distort it through divorce. This verse serves as a reminder for believers to approach marriage with reverence and commitment, seeking God's grace and wisdom to overcome challenges instead of resorting to divorce. Through this theological lens, Jesus' teaching on divorce challenges followers to uphold the sacredness of marriage and cultivate a spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation in their relationships.
