Book of Matthew - Chapter 16 - Verse 7

16:7
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.

Meaning

When the disciples reasoned among themselves, saying "It is because we have taken no bread," they were expressing their confusion and concern over the words of Jesus, who had just warned them to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. The disciples, however, misunderstood Jesus' warning, thinking that he was scolding them for forgetting to bring bread. In reality, Jesus was using the metaphor of leaven to caution them against the teachings and hypocrisy of the religious leaders. This misunderstanding highlights the disciples' tendency to focus on physical needs and earthly concerns, rather than grasping the deeper spiritual truths that Jesus was trying to convey. It serves as a reminder for all believers to seek understanding and discernment in interpreting the teachings of Christ, rather than being distracted by earthly matters.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the disciples of Jesus are shown reasoning among themselves about a practical matter - the fact that they had forgotten to bring bread with them. However, from a theological standpoint, this incident reveals a deeper issue within the disciples. Throughout the Gospels, there are multiple instances where the disciples struggle with doubts, lack of faith, and misunderstanding the teachings of Jesus. In this particular situation, their focus on physical bread betrays a lack of spiritual insight. Jesus often used physical examples to teach spiritual truths, such as when he referenced bread in the context of the Eucharist. By fixating on the literal meaning of bread, the disciples missed an opportunity to understand a deeper spiritual truth that Jesus was trying to impart. This passage serves as a reminder for believers to not be preoccupied with mundane concerns, but to seek out the spiritual lessons that Jesus is teaching.
