Book of Matthew - Chapter 15 - Verse 23

15:23
But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus encounters a Canaanite woman who is seeking help for her demon-possessed daughter. Initially, Jesus does not respond to her plea, which may seem harsh or insensitive at first glance. However, this can be viewed as a test of the woman's faith and persistence. The disciples, on the other hand, urge Jesus to send her away because she is persistently crying out to them. This interaction serves as a lesson in perseverance and faith. It shows the importance of persisting in prayer and not giving up even when faced with silence or obstacles. Ultimately, Jesus does grant the woman's request and heals her daughter, demonstrating his compassion and willingness to help those who truly seek him.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse in Matthew 15:23, where Jesus did not answer the Canaanite woman who begged for healing for her daughter, it is crucial to consider the cultural and historical context. At that time, Jewish society often viewed Gentiles, like the Canaanites, unfavorably. Jesus' initial silence and the disciples' request to send her away may reflect societal norms of the time. However, Jesus' eventual response to the woman demonstrates his ultimate mission of inclusivity and love for all people, regardless of their background.

Furthermore, a word study of the verse reveals interesting nuances. The phrase "answered her not a word" may suggest a deeper meaning beyond mere silence. It can be seen as a test of the woman's faith and persistence, allowing her to demonstrate her unwavering belief in Jesus' power to heal. The disciples' plea to send her away highlights their discomfort with the woman's pleas, but also sets the stage for Jesus to demonstrate the boundless nature of his compassion and grace.
