Book of Matthew - Chapter 13 - Verse 19

13:19
When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.

Meaning

When someone hears the word of God's kingdom but fails to comprehend its true meaning, they become vulnerable to the influence of the evil one. The devil can swoop in and snatch away the seeds of truth that were sown in that person's heart. This metaphorical imagery is used to emphasize how important it is for individuals to grasp the significance of God's teachings and not let them be easily taken away by temptations or distractions. The seeds that fall by the wayside represent those who may casually hear the word but do not internalize or understand it fully, making them susceptible to spiritual attacks. It serves as a warning to believers to be diligent in their understanding and application of God's word to prevent the enemy from stealing away the message of salvation.

Theological Overview

Those who hear the word of the kingdom but do not grasp its significance are susceptible to the attacks of the enemy, who seeks to steal away the seed that was sown in their hearts. This signifies the spiritual battle that believers face daily, as they seek to nurture their faith and grow in their understanding of God's truth. The imagery of seed scattered along the wayside serves as a warning to believers to guard their hearts and minds against the tactics of the enemy. By delving into the theological implications of this verse and examining the original Greek, one can gain a deeper appreciation for the spiritual warfare that takes place in the realm of understanding and belief.
