Book of Matthew - Chapter 12 - Verse 27

12:27
And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

Meaning

When Jesus spoke these words, he was responding to accusations that he was casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Jesus used this opportunity to challenge the religious leaders, highlighting the inconsistency in their logic. He pointed out that if he was able to cast out demons by the evil power of Beelzebub, what did that say about the exorcisms performed by their own people? Jesus implied that if the religious leaders believed that their own representatives were casting out demons by the power of God, then they should also recognize the source of his own power. By stating that their own children would be their judges, Jesus was showing that their own actions and beliefs would ultimately be their downfall. This verse serves as a powerful reminder to always be mindful of our own judgments and to be cautious of attributing the work of God to evil forces.

Theological Overview

In this verse from the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus confronts the Pharisees who were accusing Him of casting out demons by the power of Beelzebub, which was a name for Satan. Jesus challenges their logic by asking by whose power their own sons were casting out demons. This rhetorical question points to the inconsistency in their accusations, as they did not accuse their own children of using demonic power. The theological interpretation of this verse emphasizes Jesus' authority and power over demons, as He reveals that it is through the Spirit of God that He performs miracles, not by the power of Satan. The word "Beelzebub" itself is of Philistine origin, originally meaning "lord of the flies," and became synonymous with Satan in Jewish thought. By using this name, Jesus not only refutes the accusations against Him but also highlights the danger of attributing the work of God to evil forces. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the importance of discerning the source of spiritual gifts and acknowledging God's power at work in miraculous deeds.
