11:1
And it came to pass, when Jesus had made an end of commanding his twelve disciples, he departed thence to teach and to preach in their cities.

Meaning

After giving his twelve disciples instructions, Jesus departed to teach and preach in various cities. This verse highlights the importance of Jesus's mission to spread his teachings far and wide. By personally going to different cities, Jesus showed his commitment to reaching as many people as possible with his message of love, compassion, and forgiveness. It also demonstrates his dedication to nurturing and guiding his disciples, who were entrusted with spreading his teachings after his departure. This verse serves as a reminder of the urgency and importance of sharing the word of God with others, and the need to actively engage in teaching and preaching, just as Jesus did during his time on earth.

Theological Overview

After Jesus had finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he went on to teach and preach in the towns they were sent to. This verse highlights the importance of Jesus' mission and ministry, not only in his own actions but also in the delegation of tasks to his disciples. The word "commanding" in this verse denotes a sense of authority and responsibility, as Jesus entrusted his disciples with important tasks. The Greek word used for "teach" here is 'didasko,' which implies instructing and imparting knowledge, while "preach" comes from the Greek word 'kerusso,' meaning to proclaim or herald a message. Jesus' actions after commissioning his disciples demonstrate his dedication to spreading the message of the Kingdom of God to all the people in the surrounding cities. This verse serves as a reminder of the importance of both teaching and proclaiming the gospel in carrying out the mission of Jesus.
