Book of Matthew - Chapter 10 - Verse 14

10:14
And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

Meaning

When Jesus instructed his disciples to shake off the dust of their feet if they were not received or listened to, he was conveying a powerful message about the importance of sharing the message of the gospel. In Jewish culture, shaking the dust off one's feet was a symbolic act of shaking off the impurity of a place that had rejected God's message. By doing this, the disciples were showing that they had done their part in sharing the good news, but ultimately it was up to the people to accept or reject it. This act also served as a reminder that there would be consequences for those who rejected the message of salvation. As believers, we are called to share the message of Jesus Christ with others, but we cannot force anyone to believe. This verse serves as a reminder to continue sharing the love of Christ, even if faced with rejection, and to leave the outcome in God's hands.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Jesus instructs his disciples on how to respond when they are not received or listened to by others as they preach the gospel. The act of shaking off the dust from their feet was a symbolic gesture that signified moving on from a place where their message was rejected. This action was a way for the disciples to demonstrate that they had done their part in sharing the good news and that the responsibility now rested with the people who chose not to accept it. It also served as a warning of impending judgment to those who refused to repent and believe in the message of salvation. This verse emphasizes the importance of faithfully proclaiming the gospel message regardless of the response received, leaving the outcome in God's hands.
