Book of Mark - Chapter 9 - Verse 9

9:9
And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

Meaning

After experiencing the awe-inspiring Transfiguration on the mountain, Jesus instructed his disciples not to reveal what they had seen until after his resurrection. This directive was given because the full significance of Jesus' identity and mission would only be understood in light of his death and resurrection. By keeping the Transfiguration a secret until the appropriate time, Jesus ensured that his disciples would have a clearer understanding of his divine nature and ultimate purpose. This period of secrecy also allowed Jesus to continue teaching and preparing his disciples for the events that were to come, leading up to his death and resurrection. It was a pivotal moment in Jesus' ministry, adding to the mystery and profound significance of his impending sacrifice for humanity.

Theological Overview

When Jesus instructed his disciples to keep quiet about the miraculous things they had witnessed on the mountain, he was likely trying to prevent premature revelations about his true identity as the Son of God. The term "Son of man" in this context carries theological significance, as it refers to Jesus' human nature and his ultimate purpose on earth. By emphasizing the need for secrecy until after his resurrection, Jesus was laying the foundation for his disciples to fully grasp the significance of his sacrifice and the redemption it would bring. This verse underscores the importance of timing and God's divine plan, as Jesus knew that his true glory could only be fully understood and appreciated in light of his death and resurrection. The theological interpretation of this verse highlights the strategic way in which Jesus revealed his identity and mission, guiding his disciples towards a deeper understanding of his role as the Savior of the world.

American Standard Version
