Book of Mark - Chapter 8 - Verse 21

8:21
And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand?

Meaning

When Jesus asked his disciples, "How is it that ye do not understand?" he was expressing his frustration with their lack of comprehension of his teachings. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus often spoke in parables and used metaphorical language to convey deeper spiritual truths. However, his disciples struggled to grasp the true meaning behind his words. In this particular instance, Jesus was likely highlighting the disconnect between what he was teaching and how his disciples were interpreting his message. It serves as a reminder to readers that understanding Jesus' teachings requires more than just surface-level comprehension - it also requires an openness to spiritual insight and a willingness to delve deeper into the meaning behind his words. In modern times, this verse can be a call to reflect on our own understanding of the scriptures and to seek guidance from the Holy Spirit in order to grasp the deeper truths embedded within the Bible.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Jesus is expressing his frustration with his disciples for not understanding the message he is trying to convey. The word "understand" in this context has theological significance as it goes beyond mere intellectual comprehension. The Greek word used here is "suniete," which means to grasp the full meaning, to connect the dots between different pieces of information, and to perceive the underlying truth. Jesus is not simply asking why his disciples are not getting a basic concept, but he is questioning their ability to see the deeper spiritual truths he is revealing to them. This verse serves as a reminder to us as readers that true understanding of God's word requires more than surface-level reading; it demands spiritual insight and discernment. Jesus' question challenges us to ponder our own level of understanding and encourages us to seek a deeper connection with God through prayer, study, and reflection.
