Book of Mark - Chapter 6 - Verse 3

6:3
Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

Meaning

When Jesus returned to his hometown of Nazareth, the people were surprised by his teachings and miracles, questioning his authority and wisdom. They knew him as the son of Mary, a carpenter by trade, and the brother of James, Joses, Juda, and Simon. Additionally, the people mentioned that his sisters were among them. This verse highlights the skepticism and offense the people felt towards Jesus, as they struggled to reconcile the remarkable things he was doing with his humble background as a carpenter's son. The familiarity they had with Jesus and his family led them to underestimate his divine mission and question his abilities. This reaction serves as a reminder that sometimes the greatest works of God can come from the most unexpected places and individuals.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from Mark 6:3 focuses on the fact that Jesus, the Son of God, was known in his community primarily as a carpenter. This highlights the humility and humanity of Jesus, as he engaged in manual labor alongside his earthly family before beginning his ministry. The term "carpenter" can also be seen as symbolic of Jesus' role as the ultimate builder and craftsman of faith, shaping the lives of believers through his teachings and miracles. Additionally, the mention of Jesus' family members, including his brothers and sisters, has led to discussions about the nature of Mary's perpetual virginity and the familial relationships of Jesus. Some believe that the term "brother" may refer to close relatives or disciples, rather than biological siblings, emphasizing the spiritual unity and kinship found in the family of Christ. Overall, this verse invites reflection on the humanity of Jesus and the complexities of his earthly relationships, while also pointing to deeper spiritual truths about his identity as the Son of God.
