Book of Mark - Chapter 5 - Verse 17

5:17
And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.

Meaning

When the people in the region of the Gadarenes asked Jesus to leave their area, it was a response to a miracle he had performed. Jesus had just healed a man possessed by demons, casting them out into a nearby herd of pigs which then ran into the sea and drowned. The people in the area were fearful and uncomfortable with the power and authority Jesus displayed in performing this miracle. They were more concerned with their material possessions (the pigs) than with the spiritual transformation that had taken place. By asking Jesus to depart from their coasts, they were essentially rejecting his divine authority and choosing to remain in their fear and complacency. This verse serves as a reminder of the danger of prioritizing worldly possessions and comfort over spiritual growth and the acceptance of God's power and presence in our lives.

Theological Overview

In this verse, the people in the region where Jesus performed a miracle are seen praying for him to depart from their coasts. This action raises questions about why they would ask someone who had just performed a miraculous healing to leave their area. The theological interpretation of this verse suggests that the people may have been uncomfortable with the power and authority that Jesus demonstrated through his actions. They may have been fearful of the change and transformation that his presence could bring to their lives. Additionally, this verse can prompt word studies on the term "pray" and what it signifies in this context - whether it was a genuine plea for Jesus to depart or if it was a form of resistance against his teachings and authority. Overall, this verse provides valuable insights into human reactions to divine intervention and how individuals may respond differently to the presence of God in their lives.
