Book of Mark - Chapter 3 - Verse 14

3:14
And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,

Meaning

Jesus chose twelve disciples to be with him and to preach the Good News to others. By selecting these twelve individuals, Jesus was establishing a close-knit group of followers who would learn directly from him and witness his teachings and miracles firsthand. The disciples were not only companions to Jesus, but they were also appointed as messengers who would spread the message of salvation to all corners of the earth. Jesus demonstrated the importance of community and mentorship in guiding and equipping others to continue his work after his departure. By training and empowering the twelve disciples, Jesus was laying the foundation for the spread of Christianity and the establishment of the early church. The verse highlights the dual purpose of the disciples' calling - to be with Jesus and to go out into the world to share the gospel with others.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of Mark 3:14, it is important to note that this verse highlights the significance of both discipleship and evangelism in the ministry of Jesus. The phrase "that they should be with him" emphasizes the personal discipleship aspect of their calling, where they were to learn from Jesus and follow His teachings closely. Furthermore, the purpose of their ordination was not only for their own spiritual growth but also for the mission of spreading the gospel. The latter part of the verse, "that he might send them forth to preach," underscores the essential role of evangelism in the work of the disciples.
