Book of Mark - Chapter 2 - Verse 17

2:17
When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Meaning

This particular verse from the Gospel of Mark encapsulates a central theme of Jesus' ministry: the call to repentance for sinners. In this passage, Jesus is responding to the criticism of the Pharisees who question why he associates with tax collectors and sinners. His words highlight the fact that those who believe they are righteous and in no need of spiritual healing are actually the ones who are most in need of salvation. Jesus uses the metaphor of a physician to illustrate his purpose on Earth - just as a doctor is needed by the sick, Jesus came to bring spiritual healing to those who acknowledge their sins and repent. By stating that he came not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance, Jesus emphasizes the importance of humility, self-awareness, and the recognition of one's need for redemption in order to receive the grace and forgiveness offered through his teachings. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of Jesus' message of love, forgiveness, and inclusion for all who seek redemption.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse from the gospel of Mark highlights the role of Jesus as a healer and savior for those who recognize their need for him. The metaphor of Jesus as a physician emphasizes his role in bringing spiritual healing to those who are aware of their sinful state. The verse also underscores the idea that Jesus came to call sinners to repentance, rather than those who believe themselves to be righteous. This challenges the notion of self-righteousness and emphasizes the importance of recognizing one's need for salvation. In this context, the word 'physician' takes on a deeper significance, symbolizing Jesus' role as a spiritual healer for those who are spiritually sick and in need of redemption. Through this verse, Jesus invites all who are willing to acknowledge their sinfulness to come to him for healing and restoration.
