Book of Mark - Chapter 2 - Verse 10

2:10
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)

Meaning

This verse emphasizes the divine authority of Jesus Christ as the Son of man who has the power to forgive sins. By healing the sick man with palsy, Jesus demonstrates that He has the authority not only to heal physical infirmities but also to forgive sins, which was traditionally believed to be the prerogative of God alone. This display of power reveals the true nature of Jesus as the promised Messiah who came to earth to bring salvation through the forgiveness of sins. It shows that Jesus' mission was not only to perform miracles but also to offer spiritual healing and redemption to all who seek Him. This verse serves as a powerful reminder of the unique and unparalleled authority of Jesus as the Son of God who came to earth to reconcile humanity with God through His sacrificial death on the cross.

Theological Overview

Upon examining the theological interpretation of this verse, we see that Jesus, referred to here as the Son of Man, demonstrates his divine authority by forgiving the sins of the paralyzed man. In Jewish theology, only God had the power to forgive sins, so when Jesus claims this authority, he is essentially identifying himself as God in human form. This act of forgiveness not only displays Jesus' compassion and mercy but also highlights his ability to bring about spiritual healing in addition to physical healing. The phrase "Son of Man" is significant as it comes from the prophecy in the Book of Daniel, where a divine figure is given authority and dominion over all peoples. This title emphasizes Jesus' humanity as well as his divinity, showing his dual nature as both fully God and fully man. Through this powerful demonstration, Jesus establishes himself as the ultimate authority over sin and demonstrates the transformative power of God's forgiveness.
