Book of Mark - Chapter 15 - Verse 29

15:29
And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,

Meaning

When Jesus was hanging on the cross, bystanders mocked him by misquoting his earlier statement about rebuilding the temple in three days. The verse reflects the lack of understanding and the ridicule that Jesus faced during his crucifixion. The onlookers taunted him, accusing him of destroying the temple and claiming he could rebuild it in three days. However, they did not realize that Jesus was referring to his own body as the temple that would be resurrected in three days. This verse highlights the ignorance and disbelief of those who witnessed Jesus' crucifixion, as they failed to comprehend the deeper spiritual meaning behind his words. It serves as a reminder of the challenges Jesus faced and the misconceptions surrounding his true identity and mission.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of this verse highlights the theme of misunderstanding and misrepresentation of Jesus' words and actions. The people passing by mocked Jesus, referencing a statement he made about rebuilding the temple in three days. However, they misunderstood his words, as Jesus was actually referring to the temple of his body and his resurrection after three days. This misinterpretation serves as a reminder of the human tendency to misjudge and misinterpret spiritual truths.

Additionally, a word study of the phrase "destroyest the temple" can shed light on the significance of Jesus' sacrifice. The Greek word used for "destroy" can also mean "dismantle" or "tear down." This can be symbolic of Jesus' death on the cross, where his body was broken and "destroyed," only to be resurrected in three days, fulfilling his promise. The phrase "build it in three days" can be seen as a foreshadowing of Jesus' triumph over death and the ultimate rebuilding of a new temple, representing the redemption and salvation of humanity through his sacrifice.
