Book of Luke - Chapter 9 - Verse 28

9:28
And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray.

Meaning

After Jesus foretold of his impending death and resurrection to his disciples, he took Peter, John, and James up to a mountain to pray. This event is significant as it showcases Jesus' practice of praying in secluded places, away from distractions, to commune with God. By taking only a select few with him, Jesus demonstrates the importance of intimate prayer and discipleship. The act of going up a mountain symbolizes drawing close to God, as mountains are often associated with spiritual journeys and divine encounters in the Bible. Additionally, the number eight symbolizes new beginnings and resurrection, foreshadowing the transformative experience that will occur during Jesus' time in prayer. This verse serves as a reminder to readers of the importance of prayer, solitude, and fellowship in deepening their relationship with God and preparing for the challenges ahead.

Theological Overview

One theological interpretation of the verse where Jesus takes Peter, John, and James up a mountain to pray is that it is a significant moment of connection between heaven and earth. Mountains are often associated with encounters with God in the Bible, such as Moses receiving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. The act of going up the mountain to pray suggests a desire to draw closer to God and seek His guidance. Additionally, the selection of Peter, John, and James, who were close companions of Jesus, emphasizes the importance of community and shared spiritual experiences in the Christian faith. This event can also be seen as foreshadowing Jesus' transfiguration on the mountain, where Peter, James, and John witness Jesus in His glorified state and hear the voice of God affirming His sonship. In studying the Greek words used in this verse, the focus may be on the significance of prayer in the life of a believer and the power of collective prayer within the body of Christ.
