Book of Luke - Chapter 9 - Verse 27

9:27
But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.

Meaning

When Jesus spoke the words, "But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God," he was referring to the transfiguration event that would take place shortly after. The disciples who were present with Jesus at that moment would witness a glimpse of the glory and majesty of the kingdom of God through the transfiguration. This event served as a confirmation of Jesus' divinity and a foreshadowing of the coming kingdom. This verse emphasizes the imminence and power of the kingdom of God, as well as the faithfulness of Jesus' words. It also provides reassurance to his disciples that they would not only witness but also experience the kingdom of God in their lifetime. The transfiguration was a moment of revelation and insight for the disciples, strengthening their faith and understanding of Jesus' true identity as the Son of God.

Theological Overview

One possible theological interpretation of the verse 'But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God' is that Jesus is referring to the promise of his coming kingdom, which was fulfilled in part by the events of the transfiguration. The word "kingdom of God" can be interpreted in various ways in the Bible, and in this context, it likely refers to the manifestation of God's rule and reign on earth. This interpretation suggests that Jesus is indicating that some of his disciples present with him at that moment would witness a preview of his kingdom before they passed away. This view emphasizes the importance of the transfiguration event as a significant milestone in Jesus' ministry, highlighting his divine nature and authority.
