Book of Luke - Chapter 8 - Verse 20

8:20
And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee.

Meaning

In this verse, Jesus is told by certain individuals that his mother and brethren are standing outside, wanting to see him. This incident occurred during a period in Jesus' ministry when he was actively teaching and preaching to large crowds of people. The mention of his mother and brethren seeking him out highlights the close bond and familial relationships Jesus had, even while carrying out his divine mission. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining connections with loved ones amidst the demands of ministry and service. Jesus' response to this news reflects his prioritization of spiritual family ties over biological ones, as he goes on to emphasize the significance of hearing and obeying the word of God as the true mark of kinship with him. This verse thus offers a glimpse into the complex dynamics of Jesus' personal relationships and the deeper spiritual truths he imparted to his followers.

Theological Overview

When Jesus was told that his mother and brothers were outside waiting to see him, it sparked a theological interpretation about the nature of spiritual family. In this context, Jesus made a bold statement regarding the bond that believers share with him, stating, "For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother" (Matthew 12:50). This indicates that Jesus was expanding the definition of family beyond mere biological relationships to include those who follow and obey God's will. This theological insight emphasizes the importance of spiritual kinship and the unity that believers have with Christ, transcending earthly ties. It challenges us to consider the deeper significance of relationships within the body of Christ and the eternal bond shared with those who are faithful to God's word.
