Book of Luke - Chapter 6 - Verse 4

6:4
How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?

Meaning

This verse, found in the book of Matthew in the New Testament, tells the story of how Jesus entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which was meant only for the priests. This incident took place when Jesus and his disciples were hungry and in need of food. Although technically breaking the law by eating the showbread, Jesus did this to demonstrate his authority and to show that human need takes precedence over ceremonial regulations. By sharing the bread with his disciples, Jesus emphasized the importance of compassion and the true meaning behind religious laws. This act of Jesus challenges the legalistic interpretation of religious rules and highlights the value of mercy and understanding in practicing faith. This verse serves as a reminder of Jesus' teachings on love, forgiveness, and the prioritization of human well-being over strict adherence to religious customs.

Theological Overview

One of the key aspects of the theological interpretation of this verse can be found in the significance of the shewbread itself. The shewbread, also known as the "bread of the Presence," was a sacred offering displayed in the tabernacle and later in the temple. It symbolized the continual presence of God among His people and the provision of His sustenance. By taking and eating the shewbread, Jesus was signifying his authority over traditional laws and rituals, and highlighting the greater importance of mercy and compassion. This act of sharing the shewbread with his disciples, who were not priests, challenges the strict interpretation of the law that restricted its consumption to the priests alone. Jesus's actions here can be seen as a foreshadowing of the new covenant he would establish, where access to God's presence and provision would no longer be limited to a select few, but extended to all who believe in Him.
