Book of Luke - Chapter 22 - Verse 36

22:36
Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Meaning

Many scholars interpret this verse from the Gospel of Luke (22:36) as Jesus preparing his disciples for difficult times ahead. In this passage, Jesus advises his followers to be prepared for persecution and to protect themselves if necessary. The instruction to sell one's garment to buy a sword symbolizes the idea that self-defense is important, even for those who may not usually feel the need to resort to violence. However, it is important to note that this verse has been subject to debate and interpretation, with some arguing that Jesus' message was metaphorical or meant for a specific context at the time. Ultimately, this verse serves as a reminder of the complex and multifaceted teachings found within the Bible, urging readers to delve deeper into the text to uncover its true meanings.

Theological Overview

In this verse, Jesus instructs his disciples to prepare for their future ministry by carrying provisions such as a purse and a scrip. The mention of a sword, however, has been a topic of debate among theologians. Some interpret it as a metaphor for spiritual readiness in the face of opposition, while others view it as a literal call to self-defense. The word "sword" in the original Greek text can mean a literal weapon or symbolize conflict and division. It is important to consider the context in which Jesus spoke these words, as he often used figurative language to convey deeper spiritual truths. Ultimately, the message here may be understood as a call to be prepared for the challenges and opposition that may come their way in their mission to spread the Gospel. Jesus is highlighting the importance of being equipped, both materially and spiritually, to face the trials and tribulations that may arise in the disciples' future ministry.
