Meaning

This verse from the Bible is a reminder to believers not to be overwhelmed or frightened by the presence of wars and commotions in the world. The verse acknowledges that these events are a part of the fulfillment of prophecy, signaling the coming of the end times. It encourages believers to stay steadfast in their faith and not to lose hope, for these turbulent times are a necessary part of the divine plan. The verse teaches that while these events must occur before the end, they do not indicate that the end will come immediately. Therefore, believers are urged to remain calm and trust in God's ultimate purpose and timing. By understanding the significance of these events in the broader context of God's plan, believers can find comfort and reassurance in the midst of turmoil and uncertainty.

Theological Overview

When examining the theological interpretation of the verse 'But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by,' we understand that Jesus is preparing his disciples for the trials and tribulations that will come before the end times. The phrase 'wars and commotions' refers to the chaotic and tumultuous events that will occur in the run-up to the fulfillment of God's plan. Despite the turmoil, believers are urged not to be afraid, as these events are a necessary precursor to the ultimate realization of God's kingdom. The word 'terrified' conveys a sense of fear and panic, which Jesus instructs his followers to resist. Instead, they are to remain steadfast in their faith and trust that God's purpose will prevail in the end. This verse serves as a reminder that even in the midst of chaos and uncertainty, believers can find solace and hope in the certainty of God's promises.
